MATCH REPORTS 10th MAY

“PREMIER” DIVISION

Promoted Cloughton featured in a real thriller at home to strongly fancied Staithes, showing their tremendous potential by pulling off a one wicket victory. Staithes batting first got away to a promising start forcing the total along to 62 – 1 after only 10 overs, Ian Dixon leading the way with 48. Simon Bowes added 29 but the introduction of spin changed the match as Jake Dudding picked up 6-48 and Stuart Harris 3-42 to tumble the visitors out for 148. In reply the home team were in real trouble loosing their first 6 wickets with only 60 runs on the board until Ben Luntley was joined at the crease by Damian Readman and again the game changed. Ben hitting 41 and Damian remained unbeaten at the end with 32 as victory was gained with the last pair batting.

The other promoted team Sherburn was brought down to earth after beating champions Staxton last week were well beaten at home by Flixton 2nds. Sherburn took first knock but the strong batting side failed to fire with only Craig Sanderson 31 and Daley Wharton, who remained unbeaten with 25 threatening a more challenging total, as Andrew Ryan claimed 4-16 for the visitors. Flixton made light work of chasing the target with Geof Hill leading the way with an unbeaten 61. John Boddy added 27 and Adam Ditchburn also remained unbeaten with 21 as the total was passed for the loss of one wicket.

Staxton bounced back from last weeks defeat to beat Ebberston, at Staxton by 26 runs but had to recover from 22 – 3 thanks to a strong batting performances from James Armstrong 71 and Chris Dove 38. 172 – 7 after 45 overs was not an over daunting total for the visitors to chase but they too found runs difficult to score slipping to 87 – 8 as Richard Flinton claimed 5-43 and Elliott Cooper bowling a miserly spell of which his first 12 overs conceded only 5 runs. A late rally from Colin Palmer, recently transferred from York C.C. brought him an unbeaten 33 together with Mike Horsley 26 the pair adding 59 for the 9th wicket left the visitors 26 runs adrift when the 45 overs were completed, Elliott Cooper having completed a spell of 16 overs, 8 maidens taking 2 wickets for 30 runs.

Forge Valley moved to the top of the table by beating Nawton Grange on their East Ayton ground by 7 wickets. Nawton were bowled out for 139 finding Andy Holden in great form picking up 6-18 from 15.2 overs which included 8 maidens. The only batting performances of note were from Justin Palmer 28 and John Pickard 26. In reply Mick Glew hit 33, Dave Hartley 58, which included four 6’s and both Nigel Kendrew and Simon Dobson scored 20 runs each.

Whitby recorded their first victory overwhelming Cayton by 8 wickets on their cliff top ground. Cayton were restricted to 116 – 9 after 45 overs with Brian Heywood hitting a patient 55 but Aussie Brendan Godfrey created all the problems taking 6-29. In reply brothers Paul and Mark Harrison soon got the scoreboard ticking, Mark scoring 29 and Paul remaining to the end with an unbeaten 60.

DIVISION ‘A’

Seamer still await some batting form after being bowled out at Kirkbymoorside for 52 by Howard Mudd 4-22 from 10 overs and Dan Jemmison 4-28 from 11.2 overs, the innings ending after only 24 overs. The home team lost 4 wickets knocking off the runs, Jodie Robson top scoring with 25 as Gary Lawton picked up 3-23.

Flamborough moved to the top of the table with Kirkbymoorside after posting a total of 193 – 9 at Wykeham. Dave Marshall scored 40, Andy Leeson 50 and Marcos Garcia 29 with pace bowler Dave Pearson taking 5-55. In reply Hugh Bellamy, playing his first league game for the club after transferring from Forge Valley hit 61, Ian Thompson added 27 but Simon Leeson ensured no shock result taking 5-41 to bowl the home team out for 151.

Heslerton’s openers Paul Nutt and Jake Keyworth put on 62 runs against promoted Lockton on the Heslerton ground before Jake was caught off the bowling of Pete Robson for 34. Paul continued to anchor the innings being the fifth wicket to fall with his score on 57. Faraz Ul Haq added 35 from 43 balls faced, Sam Triffitt a forceful 22 before being brilliantly caught and Adam Spaven remained unbeaten on 23 to post a total of 209 – 6 after 45 overs, Les Welburn proving the most successful bowler taking 3-44.  Replying both openers were caught behind by Sam Triffitt off the bowling of Kristian Wilkinson, Andy Hill scoring 9 and Mike Brown 36. Steve Stead 33 and Gareth Hunt 26 forged a fourth wicket partnership of 56 but after Steve was bowled by left arm pace bowler Wilkinson and Gareth was bowled by Adam Spaven the remainder crumbled to an all out 145, Kristian claiming the fine figures of 6-31.

The battle of two coastal clubs ended with victory for Bridlington 2nds at Filey against Foords by 4 wickets. Foords were bowled out for 128 by Philip Elliott 5-29 and Richard Mainprize 3-26 with  Kieran Grainger and Paul Kempson scoring 37 runs apiece. The visitors innings centred around a 2nd wicket partnership of 85 between Steve Briggs who remained unbeaten one short of his half century and Bill Emmerson 39, Richard Riley adding 25 with Paul Barnes taking 3 of the wickets to fall for 39 runs.

Scalby continued their promising start beating Forge Valley 2nds at Scalby by 7 wickets. Valley 2nds were restricted to 150 by John Barton 5-46 and John Crowson 3-54 with only Gary Gibson 40 threatening a more challenging total. Scalby’s reply was led by Paul Marton with an unbeaten 61 and Paul Hesp 39 as victory was gained for the loss of 3 wickets.

DIVISION ‘B’

Settrington moved to the top of the division after beating fellow promotion hopefuls Snainton by 5 wickets at Settrington. Snainton took the initiative by dominating the home attack setting a total of 236 – 6 thanks to good knocks from brothers Michael Eyre 33 and Stephen 60 with Alex Stockill hitting 53. In reply Settrington lost their first 4 wickets for 65 runs but the experienced Martin Jackson who continued to be unbeaten with 85 and skipper Robert Robinson 75 put together a fifth wicket partnership of 147 taking the home team to the verge of victory.

Brompton were bowled out on their home ground by Thornton Dale for 124 despite Anthony Glaves scoring 64. Star of the visitors attack was Stuart Hill who finished with the excellent figures of 8-55. Andrew Rudd scored 35 replying for Thornton Dale but it was an unbeaten 52 by Tom Sigsworth that ensured their comfortable 7 wicket victory.

Promoted Wold Newton gained their first victory beating Fylingdales at Wold Newton by 7 wickets. Charlie Gray proved the man in form, taking 5 – 45  with the ball to send Fylingdales back to the pavilion for 126, then when the home team batted scored an unbeaten 52 towards the final total of 132 – 3. Will Hall added 32.

Shaun Smith 31 and Jason Feaster 26 helped Ryedale to a total of 128, a total that would have been more challenging but for a fine spell of bowling by Sewerby’s Pete Baxter who claimed 4 wickets for 21 runs. Visitors Sewerby lost 4 wickets knocking off the runs, Ross Harrison scoring 41 and Ian Dennis remained unbeaten with 53.

Ganton recovered from first match blues to beat Cayton 2nds by 9 wickets at Cayton. The home team were made to struggle as Bob Carver claimed 6-34 and with James Richardson taking 4-19 Cayton were taking tea with their final total on 74. Ganton wasted little time knocking off the arrears thanks to undefeated knocks by Tim Corrigan 28 and Andrew Limb 36.

DIVISION ‘C’

Best partnership of the day was between Jeremy Wardell 82 and Chris Helm 64, the pair featuring in a third wicket partnership of 154 for Hospitals against Forge Valley 3rds on the West Ayton ground. Hospitals final total of 224 – 4 proved out of reach for Valley 3rds despite creditable batting performances from Tim Farrant 43, David Sowden 30 and an undefeated 5th wicket partnership of 60 between youngster Shaun Fell 39 and Peter Wannop 21. Chris Helm made runs difficult to score taking 3-68 from his marathon 23 over spell.

Ebberston 2nds proved too strong for Staxton 2nds who they bowled out for 71 at Ebberston thanks to impressive bowling spells from Rob Ireland 4-18 and Eddie Swiers whose 3 wickets only cost 2 runs. The home team relied on ex first team wicket-keeper, Ashley Winspear to put them on the winning track scoring 23 as victory was gained for the loss of 5 wickets.

Whitby 2nds enjoyed their visit to Nawton Grange 2nds scoring 207 – 5 from their 45 overs thanks to an unbeaten 84 from Duncan Steele, Andrew Marshall 43 and Rikki Lawrence 32. Nawton, in reply found Steve Crowther in impressive form with the ball taking 6-24 as the home team were bowled out for 87, loosing the match by 120 runs.

Ravenscar also scored over 200 as Ivan Kirk 31, Jish Rewcroft 66 and William Warwick 33 helped the total along to 201 – 5 at home against Cloughton 2nds. Although Liam Salt replied with 34 and Michael Readman 33 Cloughton were bowled out for 116.

 

Richard Jackson 30 and Tony Robson 35 were the principle scorers out of Grindale’s total of 183 – 7 against Seamer 2nds on the Seamer ground, Lindon Darby claiming 4-36. The total proved beyond the home team despite Dave Lunn and David Graham both scoring 39 as Ian Cousins claimed 3-54, Andy Smith 3-39 and Thomas Jackson 4-21 to end the Seamer innings on 122.
