“PREMIER” DIVISION
Forge Valley leapt back into second place, taking advantage of being one of only five matches completed in all four divisions. Their match on the East Ayton ground against Staxton was reduced to 30 overs due to rain interruptions during Staxton’s innings which ended on 128 – 8, Chris Dove scoring 31, which included 4 boundary fours and one six. Paul Russell remained unbeaten on 29 and Paul Wilson having bowled throughout the innings taking 4-64. In reply Simon Dobson hit a defiant 46, scored from 67 balls and also included 4 fours and 1 six. Will Tindall ensured victory scoring an unbeaten 31 the winning runs being hit with just 10 balls of the match remaining. Josh Bullen proved the visitors most successful bowler taking 2-32.
Nawton Grange recorded their second victory of the season moving them off the bottom of the table and on to equal points with their opponents Sherburn whom they beat by 3 wickets. Again the match had to be reduced to 39 overs with home team Sherburn scoring 135 – 8 thanks to encouraging knocks from Dean Foxton 41 and Andy Lickes 25 but the bowlers were always in control Nigel Johnson taking 4-62 from 19 overs and Neil Ward 3-43 from 8. Nawton were made to battle for their runs, Steve Dodsworth scoring 30 and Ian Prendergast 26 but it was a forceful 28 scored from 20 balls from James Thompson that saw the visitors home with only 5 balls of the match remaining to be bowled.
Cayton made a poor start at Flixton against Flixton 2nds but with the total on 36 – 3 the heavens opened, washing out the prospects of further play.
The two other matches, Cloughton v Whitby and Staithes v Ebberston were abandoned without any play possible.
DIVISION ‘A’
In a match reduced to 34 overs each team and interrupted twice by rain Seamer bowled visitors Lockton out for 80, Les Welburn top scoring with 17. Star of the home teams bowling attack was Mark Tyson who claimed 6 wickets at a cost of 28 runs from only 7 overs. Chris Clifford proved as consistent as ever taking 3-24 from 16 accurate overs. In reply Anthony Jenkinson was in belligerent form hitting an unbeaten 56 to guide Seamer to a 5 wicket victory. Pete Robson proved Lockton’s leading bowler taking 3-20 in his 7 overs.
Paul Bowes hit 86 for Foords against his former club Heslerton helping them to a final total of 189 – 9. Will Hunter batting at number 7 added 41 with Adam Spaven creating most of their problems claiming 6 – 34. Heslerton again struggled with the bat with only Paul Nutt 42 and skipper Simon Oxendale 29 occupying the crease for any length of time as the team fell away to good bowling spells from Paul Barnes 5-48 and Phil Dickens 3-18 to be all back in the pavilion for 146. The victory leaves last season’s relegated clubs Foords and Kirkbymoorside looking favourites for an immediate return to the premier division.
Only one over was possible at Wykeham were the visitors Bridlington 2nds failed to record a run before rain drove the players to the pavilion and no further play was possible.
The other two matches Flamborough v Forge Valley 2nds and Kirkbymoorside v Scalby were abandoned with no play possible
DIVISION ‘B’
Only two matches in the division were able to start, Fylingdales batted for 2 overs scoring 8 without loss against Thornton Dale and Sewerby 2nds tried in vain to beat the weather at home against Snainton but on 39 without loss they had to leave the field, Vince Clarke remaining unbeaten on 26 as did Ben Lawry on 12.
The three remaining matches Cayton 2nds v Settrington, Ryedale v Brompton and Wold Newton v Ganton were abandoned without a ball being bowled.
DIVISION ‘C’
Staxton 2nds cemented their position at the top of the table by beating second placed Grindale by 26 runs at Staxton. In a match reduced to 30 overs the home team scored 163 – 4, Mick Bates hitting a half century, Liam Scott 36 and Adrian Young an unbeaten 40, Ian Cousins having taken 3-66. In reply Grindale were thankful for Ian Cousin’s knock of 59 but it was all in vain as Chris Stephenson kept the visitors in check taking 5-27 reducing them to a final total of 137 – 9 after their 30 overs.
The remaining four matches, Ebberston 2nds v Cloughton 2nds, Nawton Grange 2nds v Seamer 2nds, Ravenscar v Forge Valley 3rds and Whitby 2nds v Hospitals all fell victims to the weather.
